My Robert is a huge Matchbox fan. He has been collecting Matchbox since he learned how to walk, and with the 60th Anniversary upon us, he is excited about the anniversary packs that are available for sale. I am a sucker when it comes to sweets, and I have found it to be so hard when I have been told that I am not allowed or that I have to limit my sugar intake. To me, it is like saying you have to limit the amount of air you can breathe, or at least that is the way I felt when I was first told that I would have to watch my sugars. I can remember it like it was just yesterday. I had gone in for that horrible sugar test, you know the one where you have to drink that nasty stuff to see if you have gestational diabetes, well this time last year I was sitting in my Dr.'s office waiting for my Dr. Unfortunately for me, I had some off labs and ended up in the hospital. Later that day, my Dr personally came to my room at the hospital to inform that I had gestational diabetes on top of all of the other issues I had with my pregnancy. Not the news I wanted to hear, but it was what it was. I thought to myself, "How am I going to survive this?". I mean, I still had quite a bit longer before I was due to deliver Wyatt, and I was going to have to go on a strict diabetic diet for the remainder of my pregnancy. Which meant, no more of that delicious ice cream from the ice cream truck that came down my street twice a day, no more trips to the snow cone stand down the street where I would order double syrup and cream, and no more late night sugar cravings where I would send my husband out with a shopping list of outrageous items that in no way should ever be consumed together or even be put on the same shopping list together. My pregnant life as I knew it was officially over, or that is the way I saw it. In my previous pregnancies I indulged in every guilty pleasurable craving that my pregnant brain conjured up, and I enjoyed every moment of it, but not this time around. I had to turn that all off, and focus on the task at hand. Cooking a healthy baby, and keeping myself healthy as well! So, after getting the news about the gestational diabetes, I had to set up a appointment with a diabetic specialist and one with a dietitian. I learned from the Dr that I saw for my Diabetes that there were ways to still enjoy life even with out all of the sugar, and with the diet plan that the dietitian and I came up with, I found that life can go on, even though I had diabetes. I found that finding sugar free snacks would be a way to fill in those sugar cravings that I got, like finding sugar free candies and such.

Recently I was sent a pack of the new Werther's Original Sugar Free Caramels candies to try out. Like I have said, I love sugar, and if I did not know better, I would not know that these were sugar free. They are so smooth and creamy tasting, just like the regular Werther's Original candies, and what makes them even better aside from them being sugar free is that they come in some really great flavors like Classic Caramel, Caramel Apple, Caramel Coffee, and Caramel Cinnamon! I found all of these flavors to be just as mouth watering as the original, and with each of them just having 8 calories per piece, well this is a guilty pleasure that I can indulge in even on my diet! I may not be pregnant any longer, but after having kids, I am on a journey, a major one to loose weight and try to get back to pre-mommy weight, or somewhat close to that. I have developed some medical issues due to my weight so it is important that I follow and stick to plans and goals that my Dr and dietitians have set, and one of the things that I have to stick to is watch my sugar intake. I also love that when I have my dad over, since he is a diabetic and has his own issue with a sweet tooth, I can have some of his favorite candies in a sugar free version on hand and in a variety of flavors on hand for him to enjoy!! 

Along with the Werther's Originals Sugar Free Caramels that I was sent, I was also sent a some interesting information on a survey that they had conducted. The survey was called the Sugar Free Satisfaction Survey and they took 1,000 adults with diabetes. 66% found that avoiding sugary treats was a difficult thing to do. I can relate to those numbers because I did find that hard to do, but with a treat like these Werther's Originals Sugar Free Caramels, following a sugar free diet can be easier!!!
